Few Microcaps

with 175 comments

hi amit,
you recently said you had 10 microcaps on your radar (few of them barely having any liquidity). Could you share a few of those ideas.

I would encourage you to pursue your own research such as,

1. Emailing the company
2. Calling up company secretary by phone

without anyone’s support and arrive at your conclusions about these microcaps.

Paramount Cosmetics

Leader of “Bindis” Shilpa Brand, declining buggy whip industry but trying to establish Instinct de odourant brand etc, debt is concern.

Bharat Fertilizer

Sale of apartments and agri culture play. Back on dividend list and fertiliser outsourcing. Can’t lose money but long term growth is uncertain.

What I can tell you is that they don’t deserve more than 1-2% weight of portfolio if considering them for long term just yet.

  6. Gut busting and amusing comment by Axis Bank management:

“Mgmt feels that their Tier 1 CAR of 9.49% is quite comfortable.
With slowing growth,CAR shouldn't decline much and hence they don't have immediate need to raise capital.”

Its like saying, USA GDP is likely to grow as most couples are having three children now and population expansion will ensure
US will continue to have biggest economy well into 22nd century.

    Or

That we are already in pain for 60 years in India under oppression of domestic politicians. Our tolerance has been improving since our grand parents days who worked under organised management of Britishers in reign of Queen Victoria. New generation is used to chaos, hence India can live with commotion and “all is well”.

They will continue to innovate and bring new products to market. Maccaferri was estd. 8 years before Strata India hence Strata will be same size 8 years later. I feel the quality of management is even better than Maccaferri. A single project can be worth 200-300-500 Crores once credibility and execution capability is proven.

  22. Dear Sandeep,

No worries mate, you have to read Omnitex Annual Reports for past three years available at http://www.omnitex.com website. Most answers are in that and Care report posted by Jatin.

Its a 50:50 JV Between Omnitex Ltd and Glen Raven Inc. Now Omnitex promoters own 20% in JV as more equity was infused.

  23. Hi Amit..

Thanks for addressing my question patiently. It's my bad that i didn't even gone through AR's of the company before posting this question to you.

Now that after having read the AR's of the last two years and also few of the above posted links.. I have the below queries and would be glad if you can address these questions with the information that you have currently.

    1. How the JV's usually works?? I couldn't see any of the Strata's financials getting reflected in Omnitex over the recent results. In AR FY12 i have seen that they mentioned Starta's revenues reached 50 Cr figure. From when the financials of Strata will get reflected in Omnitex.

    2. If i am not wrong the current holding of Omnitex in Strata is 29.5% from the AR FY12. Please correct me here if am wrong.

    3. Any idea on the moat and Size of the Business.

    4. Why omnitex's financials are just reflecting negligible revenues though it is having stake in various businesses like strata and rockwood walls.

    5. Also please share some information on its core Business. I believe their core business is trading in Fabrics.

  24. Amit..

    Few more questions as below.

    1. Is Omnitex manufacturing and marketing the Sunbrella brand in India? or How is it going to get benefited through their JV Glen Raven??

    2. Also would be glad if you can share more information on Omnitex-Geopier Business..

    Sandeep

    September 17, 2012 at 2:26 am

  25. They don't have any core business.

Immediate catalyst is missing. I want to present them something, will get in touch with them soon.

Moat – They are leaders in their field of expertise. Industry is fragmented and top 4 players have a lot to gain.

Consolidation of results happens only after 50/51% shareholding, unless Omnitex promoters decide to put remaining 20% into listed entity by issuing more warrants to themselves/shares, they will not be consolidated with Strata.

They only have land and office worth 10-20 Crores which is converted into Strata India. Try calling their phone number listed on BSE website.

Sunbrella is not given to Omnitex.

    Thanks

    Amit Arora

    September 17, 2012 at 7:01 am

  26. Hi Amit..

From your notes “Consolidation of results happens only after 50/51% shareholding, unless Omnitex promoters decide to put remaining 20% into listed entity by issuing more warrants to themselves/shares, they will not be consolidated with Strata” . I understand that their present holding as per their FY12 AR is 29.5% in strata. If they don't convert their holding to more than 50% then what would be the likely scenario. how the company will be valued if they dont have any topline on their consolidated financials

    ==============

I believe you mean 'then' instead of 'than'. In 2001 you could have said the same thing about Tanishq. There are 10,000 jewellers in India, why start a branded jewellery company. Doesn't 100% YOY “profitable” sales growth for past 6 years speak for itself for Strata India from 1 Crore to 52 Crores and for Maccaferri from 10 Crores in 2006 to 250 Crores today tell a self evident story ? There are 40 Global Players, 10 in India. Top two are Maccaferri and Strata, rest of global players are not in India meaningfully. Right now its a holding company until there is a further catalyst and valued accordingly, hence deserving of only 1-2% of portfolio.

Can you predict, forecast, forsee, computr, anticipate, augur, calculate, conjecture, estimate, foreknow, foretell, guess, precognise, be prescient, prevision, project with 80% level of accuracy that their sales will be atleast 2-3 times current level over next 4-5 years. The lower the level of accuracy
in forecast the less the percentage allocation in portfolio. We DO need to predict future revenues NOT stock prices.

  30. Hi Amit..

Given that it is a holding company at present having 29.5% stake in Strata, how do you think it is valued at the moment. Holding companies in India are trading 50% to their market values.
Omnitex is now trading around 9 crores Mcap and considering that as 50% of it's market value, strata India's Mcap can be obtained as 61 crores. Looking at their current financials, future potential and the past growth it is fairly valued to me.

Would be glad to know more on Omnitex's approach towards Strata in the future i.e if they are looking to take their holding to 50% to have their financials reflected in its balance sheet.

Any comments on its valuation and future approach towards Strata??

  31. Valuations in my words “Valuations are like satellites (earth) revolving around 'Intrinsic Value' (Sun) in an elliptical orbit. The long term investor takes comfort in cir-cum-ambulating a galaxy (while sun voyages around center of milky way) whereas trader is a tourist and stays for a season. Since the orbit is elliptical and invisible, there cannot be a universal agreement on valuation. It depends on one's vantage point and varies with time.”

Eating chips (all brands including those by MNCs including Pepsi, Frito Lay, Heinz), french fries of all fast foods including McDonalds, KFC, baked products and cakes can cause cancer. Answer is simple, they contain 500 times more acrylamide than WHO permissible limits in water. This is one of strong reasons for rise of cancer in Indian cities.

  50. In the US there is no legislation on chemicals injected in Fracking.

President Obama (has either taken bribe) or just sitting idle since February 2012 and not passing the law, Environmental Protection Agency – EPA – has forwarded him documents to approve.

Gas has made USA oil import free, if they approve EPA then it will slow them down.

Since 2005 – 2009 Oil companies have injected millions of gallons of diesel into earth for fracking, that is no longer allowed.

Fracking causes leakage in potable acquifiers hence chemical has to be disclosed. Its grey area and nobody in World knows what chemicals are being injected.

Hence material has to be bio degradable. Meaning – plant based. Meaning millions of acres of farming. Meaning Guar can not be removed, or grow other millions of acres of land with another crop.

Companies cannot keep the formula secret like Coca Cola and label it CleanStim etc.

FracFocus for the past one year is just filling the gap while Govt. dilli dallies and US oil companies grease palms, http://fracfocus.org/chemical-use/chemicals-public-disclosure

Ridiculous and Hilarious at the same time:

“To date, EPA has not included oil and gas extraction as an industry that must report under TRI. This is not an exemption in the law. Rather it is a decision by EPA that this industry is not a high priority for reporting under TRI. Part of the rationale for this decision is based on the fact that most of the information required under TRI is already reported by producers to state agencies that make it publicly available. Also, TRI reporting from the hundreds of thousands of oil and gas sites would overwhelm the existing EPA reporting system and make it difficult to extract meaningful data from the massive amount of information submitted.”

  74. Remind me of my prediction in 2017.

Hawkins, TTK Prestige, Page Industries, Zydus Wellness, Jubilant Foodworks will NOT become 5 baggers for next 5 years i.e. until 31st December 2017. These are supposedly hottest stock of 2011-12.

But Thangamayil has 80-90% probability to become 8-12 bagger from today at 200 Rs i.e. 1600 – 2400 Rs+ on PE rerating ofr 4-5 times and EPS growth of 4-5 times.

  77. Thangamayil has posted 20 crs PAT in 2nd qtr post exp non cash item. Even if we assume 70 cr annual PAT share still available at 5 PE.Thangamayil can easily double from here without getting even slightly expensive.Company operates in Tamilnadu which is the highest gold consuming state in India.so expansion is highly profitable than say TBZ which operates in low gold consuming states.TBZ & Thangamayil posted same profits in Fy12 of 60 crs & TBZ trades at 1300 crs Mcap & Thangamayil at 350 crs. Thangamayil can reach 1000 rs per share if this gap has to be bridged.

To add to your comment. We all know like back of our hand what Moat Nestle, 3M and Titan Industries represent. But to become 5 bagger Titan Industries market cap should go from 25000 crores to 125000 Crores, which it will NOT for next 5 years.

They're a great regional company with dominant position in a state. Although they have yet to prove outside the state.

What is your view on Simran Farms.. did u change your perception on it…I sense Huge undervaluation and very good opportunity for long term investors… A debt free growing company in a growing sector with throw away valuations. I really doubt if there is something that we(retail investors) are missing here. Is that management Fraud?? Do you think that market is not ready to believe their Financials??? Desperately waiting for your advise on this.

  91. Sandeep,

I don't believe Simran Farms is fraud or their financials are fudged. In investing micro caps can test patience.

I can't recommend because loss will be yours if it goes against, sometimes I do advise against buying certain stocks, like I did for Varaad Ventures and Tokyo Plast in November 2011 here

    http://multibaggersindia.blogspot.co.nz/2011/09/in-quest-for-stars.html

IMO forget Simran Farms. Focus right now on what is working. Amara Raja, Thangamayail, Housing Finance companies, Banks etc, Cera. Earn 20-30% per annum. Have multiple growth drivers for your portfolio. Become billionaire, then buy 25% of Simran Farms another day if you find value, till then a minor allocation.

  100. Hi Sachi

Everyone is ignorant as to what keeps stock price low for prolonged periods along with you. Once a stock grows five times/ upto 100 Crores on fundamentals then 1 trillion $ (5,00,000 Crores) of institutional money wants to buy. Until then only a few lion hearts are interested. Nobody wanted to buy Relaxo at 50 Rs in 2010, Symphony @ 5 Rs in 2009, Hawkins @ 120 Rs, TTK @ 90 Rs etc etc.

No institution is interested in stocks with market cap less than 50 Crores, even if they buy 4% of a 50 Crores company, their 10,000 Crores portfolio with that investment of 1-2 crores can't make a dent in net results of portfolio. We as retail investors don't have problems of 10,000 Crores surplus, so that we need to find companies with market cap over 500 crores.

It makes sense to load up on a company as it nears 100 Crores market cap, coz they its close to the knee of S curve eg: 45-180 Rs in RS Software a 6-10 months.

At other times it can take a decade of patience if investing in ultra micro caps.

How to separate future Relaxo's,TTK's,Symphony's & Hawkin's from 100's of similar looking growth companies is toughest task or may be near to impossible ball-game.We really cannot predict how mkt cycle, economic, regulations or mgmt short-steps can hurt a company.May be we need a good luck + good risk appetite?.How we react with failures, and how we react with short gains , and all that stuff goes in to make a good fortune.

May be thats why we don't see 100's of Jhunjhunwalas'a or Buffet's in stock market fortune makers, as parameters to determine success is too high..

I have shortlisted the following stocks which i guess should have a bright future, each havin its own reason to do so.
    1. Narmada Gelatines(good cash flows, sitting on cash, high dividend yield, plus chances of a takeover)
    2. Talwalkar's better value fitness : We are aware that Talwalkar's is expanding. What i wanted to be sure about was whether they have been expanding without burning cash. Their results gives me the confidence that they are.
Once the capex reduces i guess it should be more of a cash cow.
    3. LIC housing finance : everybody is interested in property : Until there is a property bubble burst, these companies should keep on doing well. Also 13% margin is quite ok to me.

I want to know your opinion on these 3.

    Current Market capital : 225Cr
Debt on the Books :: 700Cr (2012 balance sheet)
Cash on the Books :: 200
    ————————-
    Enterprise value :: 725Cr

So it's around 725 Market capital company as of today. so it's trading around 4PE trailing. revenues are good. i am still trying to understand the 50% drop in net profit last quarter.

They have added 20% of employees in last one year, that seems reflecting on their 26% increase in employee cost.
